in the world...

“In the World...” will provide a somewhat in-depth description of where you can find me in the world. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I will be based in Belize, Central America working in the field of public health. This page will tell you all about the country I’ll be calling home, what my job description is, and other basic information about Belize as a country.

Geography: Belize is is located on the Northeast coast of Central America, and borders Mexico in the north, Guatemala on the West and South, and the Carribean sea on the east coast. Also along the east coast are an array of over 200 off-shore islands also known as “Cayes” (pronounced “Keys”).  Belize is a relatively small country, spanning only 68 miles at it’s widest point, and 168 miles in length. The land rises in the south to about 3,000 feet above sea level, with the rest of the country being relatively flat land.

Climate: Belize has a subtropical climate, with an average annual temperature of about 79 degrees fahrenheit, meaning the variance between winter and summer months is about 50-95 degrees. I’m a warm weather type of gal, so I was pleased to know that it even in winter months, the temperature rarely drops below 60 degrees. The season are usually described as being “wet” or “dry,” with the wet season lasting from June through November, and dry season from around mid-December through May. Despite this, the prediction of weather remains unpredictable and it can very well be sunny during wet season and rainy during dry season.

Population: Very small, about 320,000 people. Belize’s population is extremely diverse, with a majority population of 50% Mestizo (mixed Spanish and indigenous decent), 25% Creoles, 12-12% Maya, 6% Garinagu (Garifuna) and 9% other.

What will I be up to in Belize?

That's all you'll get for now.

Stay tuned for blog entries that will highlight more on Belize specific to the culture and my own experiences as I adapt to life in this beautiful country.
